What to expect when you call

What to expect when you call

  • Choose a moment when no one can hear or see you.
  • Use a phone or computer that you trust. Chat or text may be safer than a call.
  • Use private browsing and clear your history afterwards.
  • Write down one or two questions you want to ask.
  • Let the service guide the next step, at a pace that feels safe.

Helplines

A trained person listens and believes you, at your pace. They explain your options and rights, including ones you may not know. They can connect you to local centres, shelters, legal and money advice. You can stay anonymous. You decide what to share.

Anti-violence centres and shelters

You can usually call first and ask questions before you visit. Staff talk with you about what you need: safety, money, housing or the law. Support is free and confidential. You choose which steps to take, and when.

Legal advice and legal aid

They explain your rights in your situation. They tell you if you can get legal aid and how to apply. Bring any documents you have, but it is fine if you do not have them all. An advocate can go with you to appointments or court.

Debt and money advice

An adviser looks at your income, costs and debts with you. They help you make a plan and can contact lenders for you. They never judge you for being in debt. Bring letters and statements if you can do so safely.

Support for migrant women

You can often get help in your own language or with an interpreter. They explain your rights, whatever your residence status. They help with documents, forms and appointments. Support is confidential.

Emotional support and counselling

Someone listens without judging you. You can talk about anything that weighs on you. They can tell you about counselling or groups near you. You can stop the conversation at any time.
