Browse safely
If someone checks your phone or computer, these steps help you use FIRE more safely. Do only what feels safe for you: a sudden change, such as deleting all your history, can sometimes draw attention. No method is perfect, so trust your own judgement.
Leave this site quickly
Every page has a Leave this site button. Click it, or press Esc twice, and a neutral weather page opens. The Back button does not bring you back here.
Use private browsing
A private or incognito window does not save the pages you visit. In most browsers, open the menu and choose New private window or New incognito window.
Clear your history
If you did not use a private window, you can delete this site from your browsing history in the browser settings. You can remove only the FIRE pages and keep the rest.
Shared devices
On a shared phone or computer, log out when you finish and do not let the browser save your password. A public library or a trusted friend's device can be safer.
Phone tracking
Look for apps you did not install, and check which apps and people can see your location. If you think your phone is monitored, a helpline or support service can help you check safely.
Safe email
Use an email address that only you can open, with a strong password and two-step login. Check that your email does not forward messages to another address.
Private tools stay private
Tools such as the safety plan and the budget builder run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us unless you log in and choose to save it. One click clears everything.
Downloads and printouts
Downloaded plans have neutral file names, such as my-plan.pdf. Think about where you keep them, and delete files from your Downloads folder if needed.
